Making your Home Sparkle
Going beyond the basic clean out clutter advice usually given by realtors,
you can add extra sparkle to your home during open houses or showings using these simple suggestions:
- Introduce holiday or seasonal aromas and sights.
Placing a pan of cinnamon, orange peel, cloves and vanilla with water simmering on the stove or in the oven set on low,
permeates the rooms with a delicous aroma.
Decorating the kitchen or dining room table with seasonal items like pumpkins, gourds, fresh fruit in pretty bowls,
fresh flowers, etc. also give your home a comfortable atmosphere.
- Add Light
Open blinds to let in natural light when possible or turn on lights in rooms without windows. Lamps should be placed in three of the four corners of a dimmer room. Also “uplights” in large plants or little twingle clear lights on external trees sets a nice mood.
- Update Doorknobs
Old hardware on front and interior doors gives a home a dated look. Replacing them with simple Georgian-style round knobs in burnished pewter or bronze (not shiny brass) will add a chic touch without breaking the bank.
- Add Warmth
If there’s a working fireplace (and weather permits) light a fire before prospects arrive, using real wood for its pleasant aroma. Or arrange candles along a table or mantle - groupings of three or more in varying heights and a single color provides a greater impact. A few tea candles around a garden tub is also a nice tough.
- Add Mood Music
Play soft instrumental pieces or set the radio to an easy listening station, keeping the volume set very low.
- Give your Potential Buyers Privacy
Let your Buyers walk through your home on their own at their own pace. Whenever possible plan to leave the home briefly during their visit. Let their Realtor do the talking. He or she knows their wants and don’t wants. Your intrusion, however helpful or friendly you are trying to be, can make your Buyer uneasy and cause them to rush thru the viewing without really seeing the important things. If there are special features, ask your Listing Agent to make Tent Cards for you to set out, calling attenting to these special features. If there are expensive items you are worried about being stolen or broken, these should be put out of sight before your house goes on the market.
